Common questions
- Is there a free plan?
- Yes. Free gives you 10 scans a month with every feature, for as long as you like — no card needed to install. When you want more, Starter is $5/month. Paid plans are billed through your Shopify account from the day you choose one; there's no separate trial, because Free is the trial.
- What happens when I hit my scan limit?
- Scanning pauses until your count resets, and you'll see an upgrade prompt in the app. If you're hitting the Starter limit regularly, Pro gives you 20× the scans for 4× the price — 1¢ per scan instead of 5¢. If you're hitting the Pro limit too, Unlimited removes the monthly cap entirely.
- What does "unlimited" actually mean on the Unlimited plan?
- Unlimited for normal use — no monthly cap at all, with a fair-use ceiling of 500 scans a day. That's around 15,000 a month, and more than anyone scanning by hand will reach. The ceiling exists because our product data comes from services that meter us across every merchant, so one account running a script could slow everyone else down. If you ever get near it we'll always talk to you before we act on it.
- When exactly does my scan count reset?
- Every 30 days from the start of your first period — your first scan on Free, or the day you subscribe if you haven't scanned yet. It doesn't follow the calendar month, and it doesn't restart when you change plans.
- What counts as a "scan"?
- One scan is one lookup that actually returns product data. If a barcode finds nothing at all, it doesn't count against your quota — and searching by product name to find a candidate doesn't either. Only the lookup that returns the product uses a scan.
- Can I switch plans or cancel?
- Both, any time, from the Plans page inside Scan-Z — no questions asked. Cancelling a paid plan moves you to Free. Your scan count and reset date carry across every plan change, Free included — if you've already used more than Free's 10 this period, scanning pauses until the reset.
- Which barcode formats are supported?
- UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8 and EAN-13 — the formats on virtually every retail product sold in North America and Europe. A USB barcode scanner and a phone camera both work.
